    Sectional Steel vs Polyethylene Water Tanks: Which Is Right for Your Project?

    The short answer

    Poly tanks win on price for small residential needs (typically under 10,000L). For anything larger — farms, factories, fire reserves, municipal projects, mining and commercial sites — sectional steel tanks are the industry standard. They offer a 25+ year lifespan, scale to millions of litres, and cost less per litre at volume.

    If you're storing 10,000L or more, the conversation usually ends with steel. Here's why.

    Durability: why steel lasts 2 – 3× longer

    Poly tanks are moulded from a single piece of polyethylene. The South African sun is relentless, and even UV-stabilised plastic degrades over time — the surface becomes chalky, cracks appear, and the tank eventually has to be replaced. Most poly tanks need replacement within 8 – 15 years.

    Videx sectional steel tanks use Zincalume® coated steel panels with a corrosion-resistant liner. UV doesn't degrade the steel, the liner is shielded from sunlight inside the tank, and individual panels can be replaced if ever damaged — extending tank life well beyond 25 years.

    Capacity: the 10,000L turning point

    Once you need more than about 10,000L, poly stops making sense. You'd need to install multiple tanks side-by-side, plumb them together, and accept the failure risk of every additional joint. The cost adds up fast.

    A single sectional steel tank scales from 10,000L to over 5,000,000L. Farms running irrigation reserves, factories with process water needs, fire suppression systems and municipal bulk storage all use sectional steel for this reason.

    Installation: faster than you'd think

    A common misconception is that steel tanks take weeks to install. In reality, a 50,000L Videx sectional tank is typically erected on a prepared base in 1 – 3 days. The panels arrive flat-packed (cheap to transport), and the tank is bolted together on-site — no cranes needed for typical farm and commercial installations.

    When poly tanks still make sense

    We're not anti-poly. For the right job, they're the right choice:

    • Residential rainwater harvesting under 10,000L
    • Temporary or short-term storage where lifespan isn't critical
    • Sites with very limited access or budget

    Our recommendation by application

    Farms & agriculture: Sectional steel for irrigation reserves and stock water.

    Industrial & process water: Sectional steel — non-negotiable for reliability.

    Fire reserves: Sectional steel, sized to local fire authority specs.

    Commercial buildings: Sectional steel or tower tanks for elevated supply.

    Residential (under 10,000L): Poly is usually the better value.

    Emergency / temporary supply: Consider water bladders — faster to deploy than either option.
